Havdalah in Hebrew language means distinction or make a difference. At the end of Saturday night prayers, one must make the Havdalah distinction difference between what was prohibited doing in Shabbat and what is allowed to be done from now and on during the rest of the week. This ritual consists of reciting a wine prayer and a prayer for Bessamim  incense to relive the soul with good smell and at last the prayer of lighting fire for new creation . The Havdalah candle must have three wicks so to have a sturdy flame. The end of Shabbat starts once in the sky appear three shining stars. There are different traditions as for the incense Bessamim plants. Sephardi communities used living smelling plants , while Ashkenazi mostly used cloves. To store the cloves there became a wide range of different cases or pouches. Each family did as they could afford. You can find cloth pouches along with glass, ceramic or sterling silver boxes. Havdalah is intended to require a person to use all five senses. Hold the cup, smelling the spices, see the candle’s flame, hear the blessing recitation and taste the wine.

The participants have to do 3 actions once the blessing of candle is said. It is customary holding your hands up to  candle , feel its warmth , gaze at the reflection of  light in  fingernails.

Once the ceremony is over, you pour the leftover wine to extinguish the flame.

Now the entire family may chant the song “Eliahu Hanavi” or “Hamavdil ben Kodesh”
